What a midwife and pelvic expert taught me about the disconnect between the female pelvis and modern life- and how we can heal it

Introduction: Your Pelvis Is a Masterpiece of Design

One of the first things that struck me when I met Adelaide Meadow was her genuine reverence for the design of the female body- both as a work of art and a masterpiece of engineering. As Adelaide pulled out a model skeleton midway through our conversation, she held it like a sculpture while introducing me to the anatomy and function of the female pelvis. She showed me how the actions women perform every day- tucking their tailbones, pulling in their lower bellies, “neutralising” their spines- congested the pelvis and all of the organs within it. “We have a 50% prolapse and incontinence rate of women over 50, we have an infertility crisis, we have chronic infections, lower back pain, and so much of this stems from what’s going on in our pelvis. If we want to talk about any of those things, we have to start with pelvic anatomy and physiology.”
